The 2022 Ohio Gambling Survey recently released highlights for the counties in the Mahoning Valley. 

For Columbiana County, it shows that more than half of the adult population gambles in some form with more than 69,000 of the county's population gambles.

Broken down, 2.9%, 2,312 of adults in Columbiana County is considered an at-risk gambler, compared with 2.8% or 254,729 adults in the entire state of Ohio.

In other categories, there are 12.4% of low risk gamblers, about 9,944 adults, and 6.4%, 5,164 adults, are moderate risk gamblers in the county. This is compared with 10.9%, 991,513 adults are low risk gamblers and 6.1%, 560,248 adults are moderate risk gamblers in the entire state of Ohio.

Meanwhile, 65.2 percent of the population in Columbiana County, 52,273 adults, are considered non-problem gamblers. 

For context, there are 9,193,508 adults in the state of Ohio, while there are 80,353 adults in Columbiana County.

The three areas most prevalent in gambling for Columbiana County compared with Ohio is as follows:

  • Lottery: Columbiana 52.2%, Ohio 49.8%,
  • Casino: Columbiana 30.1%, Ohio 27.1%,
  • Sports: Columbiana 29.3%, Ohio 31.1%.

A closer look at the report reveals that 77.7% of at-risk gamblers play the lottery and 57.2% of at-risk gamblers go to the casino.

Demographically, young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 have the highest population of non-gamblers while adults between 25 and 44 have the highest population of at-risk gamblers at 26.3%.

African Americans have the highest percentage of at risk gamblers, sitting at 75.5%, compared with white people at 20.4%. Other races, which is undefined what type, has 55.1%.

The primary causes for at-risk gamblers in Ohio included family history at 23.5%, using alcohol and drugs at 36.8% and being intoxicated at 31.5%.
