Students from low-income households across the Mahoning Valley will soon get extra support when it comes to learning best practices for handling and making money.

The Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Financial Institution is giving the Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley (JAMV) will receive a $10,000 grant to provide financial literacy education to children and young adults in Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties.

The primary focus of the grant will be providing programs to students from low-income households.

"The need to provide financial literacy is critical in today's economy, especially for children and young adults in underserved communities," said Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield. "I am grateful that our funding provides significant impact to organizations like Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, who ensure more students continue to become ready for postsecondary education, their career and more importantly their life."

The JAMV will apply funds annually to programming that will benefit around 10,000 students between the grades kindergarten through 12 in about 455 classroom during the 2023-2024 school year.
