1998: U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. wins his eighth congressional term with 122,169 votes over challenger Paul Alberty, who received 57,125.  

Republicans completed a near sweep of statewide offices, including George Voinovich for the U.S. Senate and Bob Taft for governor, and while neither carried Mahoning or Trumbull counties, they did better than many GOP candidates in the past. 

There will be some new commissioners in the Mahoning Valley, David Ludt in Mahoning County, James Tsagaris in Trumbull County, and David Cranmer in Columbiana, all Democrats. 

1983: A study by the Eastgate Development and Transportation Agency says to build and repair roads and bridges in Mahoning and Trumbull counties will cost between $151 million and $304 million over the next 20 years. 

U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams announces an $821,000 federal grant to help pay for a new Western Reserve Transit Authority terminal in downtown Youngstown.  

Trumbull County Democratic Party Chairman Dr. William Timmins announces that Atty. Richard McLaughlin will be the new secretary-treasurer of the central committee, succeeding Judge Mitchell Shaker. 

1973: A Vindicator straw poll shows Republican Mayor Jack C. Hunter will win re-election over challenger Anthony B. Flask, a former mayor, by 7,000 votes. 

More than 100,000 Mahoning County electors -- about half of them in Youngstown -- are expected to go to the polls on Election Day. 

William E. Brown Jr., a Vietnam War veteran, will be marshal of the Veterans Day parade in Youngstown. 

1948: The Vindicator's straw poll by politics editor Clingan Jackson predicted President Truman would carry Mahoning County with 56 percent over Republican Thomas Dewey. Truman got 56 percent.

President Truman leaves his house in Independence, Mo., for a triumphant return to Washington after his re-election. 

Oliver Harris, 39, of Griffith Street, dies after being struck in the head with a brick. A 23-year-old West Federal Street man who admitted throwing the brick is being held.
