NEW CASTLE, Pa. - New Castle Police Chief Robert Salem has announced that he will be retiring from his position early next year.

According to a press release, Salem's retirement will be effective January 15, 2024 after nearly 30 years of serving in the police department and serving as Chief of Police for 11 of those years.

Upon his retirement, the title of police chief will be passed down to Lieutenant David Cumo, who has been with the department since 1998.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of New Castle as their police chief for the past 11 years. I am proud of the work we have accomplished together and I am confident that the NCPD will continue to provide excellent service to the community under the leadership of Chief Cumo," Salem said.

Chief Salem went on to describe Cumo as a "dedicated, experienced and innovative leader who will continue to build upon the strong foundation [the department has] established."

According to New Castle City Administrator, Chris Frye, Chief Salem gave the city several months notice that he was retiring in order to allow the city to find his replacement in advance and give the new chief time to grow into the position.

"I am proud of all the officers and command staff of the NCPD. They are the backbone of our department, and I am grateful for their hard work and commitment to our community," Chief Salem said.
