Alumni and donors criticize YSU hiring process, threaten to pull donations

Concerns are growing surrounding the YSU Board of Trustees decision to bring on Bill Johnson as the university's next president.
"It's the procedure, it's how this was done," said Michael Braun, YSU Alumni and Managing Editor at WGCU Public Media.
It's also what caused Youngstown State University Alumni Michael Braun to Withdraw from establishing an alumni chapter out in Fort Meyers.
"I just can't in good conscience keep doing that with what's going on," Braun said. Braun feels the process was not done correctly.
"It hearkens back to old school politics, back rooms, smoke filled rooms, that kind of stuff that people used to do these kinds of decisions that were really not the best way to do them," Braun said.
Former grad school student and former teacher, Patti Ferrara, gave a substantial amount of money to the university for scholarships and an endowment and wanted the money to reach seven figures. Now, she will no longer lend support with Johnson at the head, mainly due to his political views that she says lack diversity. Ferrara also feels the process to select Johnson was unfair.
There's more people who oppose both sides of this, the secretive way it was done, and Johnson as the pick, so much so, that they sought legal opinion.
"They are considering removing YSU as a part of their career history," said Attorney Kim Akins. "This process seemed to be extremely opaque and rapid. There's something severely wrong with the idea of someone with no background in higher education is going to lead a university, particularly with his voting history," she said.
YSU Board of Trustees will hold another meeting on December 7th that will be open to the public.
