WASHINGTON - Two of the nine people from the Valley convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol Building are pursuing appeals.

According to federal court records, the attorney for Kenneth Thomas of East Liverpool notified U.S. District Court in Washington D.C.  that he is appealing a jury’s verdict that found Thomas guilty of civil disorder, four counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding an officer, entering, or remaining in a restricted building and grounds, and disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds.

Investigators say Thomas led assaults on five officers during an incursion at the Capitol, while Congress was certifying Joseph Biden as the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election.

The conviction resulted in Thomas being sentenced to 58 months in prison, which includes a $20,000 fine.

Also pursuing an appeal is Rachel Powell, of Mercer County, often referred to as 'pink hat lady' or 'bullhorn lady' who has been sentenced to 57 months in prison on nine charges. A judge that convicted Powell ordered her to begin serving that sentence in January.

Of the nine people from the Valley convicted for January 6 offenses, only Thomas and Powell did not accept negotiated pleas.

Thomas was convicted by a jury, and Powell had her case heard by the judge who found her guilty.
