Trumbull commissioners, former 911 director settle age discrimination suit

YOUNGSTOWN - The Trumbull County Commissioners have settled an age discrimination civil rights lawsuit filed by former county 911 director Ernest Cook, according to court records.
A notation posted Wednesday on the federal court docket by Magistrate Carmen Henderson states that Cooks' civil lawsuit has been terminated after the parties reached a mutual resolution. The entry does not disclose the terms of the settlement.
Filed in U.S. District Court in early 2022, the attorney for the 71-year-old Cook alleged that he was removed from the job that he held since 2015.
Cook alleged that he was replaced with someone less qualified and 30 years younger than him.
The suit claimed that commissioner Niki Frenchko ran for County Commissioner on a platform of "Getting rid of the good old boys" which Cook says resulted in the decision to terminate at least five senior County employees. The lawsuit did not name the five employees. Frenchko denied Cook’s allegations.
One week before his removal, Cook pleaded no contest to charges of loss of physical control under the influence and failure to report a July accident in 2018 -- both misdemeanors. The charges stemmed from a collision with a teenager on a skateboard in 2018 in which Cook was off duty. Authorities say Cook did not stop after the accident happened.
The lawsuit claimed that Cook had a stellar work and attendance record for the fifteen years he was employed by the county and was never disciplined.
