Sheriff's deputies in Columbiana County are currently investigating a homicide that occurred just before 9:30 Wednesday night.

According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to Carey Road in Butler Township for a woman who had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies found the body of 50-year-old Michelle Long, who was killed by an apparent gunshot wound.

Long was a teacher with the Leetonia High School Math/STEM/Industry teacher and coach since 2015.

The Leetonia Village School District posted on its social media page Thursday afternoon that grief counselors will be available to students and staff.

"Our Leetonia Bear Family experienced a terrible loss with the sudden passing of our High School Math/STEM/Industry teacher and coach, Michelle Long. We will continue to provide access to grief counselors and all necessary support as we navigate the next steps as a school district and community. We also extend our deepest sympathies to the Long family and friends as they grieve the loss of Michelle," said Leetonia Exempted Village Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham.

The girl's varsity basketball game against Southern Local was canceled Thursday evening. The love pouring in on social media repeatedly said how Long was often students' favorite teacher.

The homicide is currently under investigation and detectives do have a suspect in mind.
