HOWLAND TWP., Ohio - A Howland woman spent the weekend in jail after police accused her of neglecting pets at her Elizabeth Ave. Southeast home.

Thirty-three-year-old Breigh Mechling was booked into the Trumbull County Jail Saturday on animal cruelty warrants filed by township police.

Police say Mechling drove away as officers arrived at her home last week to investigate a report that three dogs were outside in the snow without food, shelter, or water.

According to a police report, an officer could see the outline of the dogs’ ribs and spine beneath their skin.

One of the dogs was vomiting, and another was bleeding from open wounds. Insects could be seen around a cat, according to police.

Mechling was scheduled for arraignment in Warren Municipal Court on Monday.

The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project took the animals for veterinary and other care.
