COLUMBUS, Ohio - Governor Mike DeWine is pushing for the passage of a bill that would make changes to Ohio Issue 2 ahead of it going into effect Thursday.

The Governor said he met with House and Senate members Tuesday on the potential passage implementation of a recreational marijuana bill.

DeWine hoped the Senate and House would pass a bill before Wednesday night, even though the bill would take 90 days to become law after it's signed by the Governor.

Without the enactment of the bill, it would become legal for Ohioans to use recreational marijuana, but there would not be a legal place to buy it.

DeWine said the lack of a place to legally buy marijuana, the black market would flourish with the potential of marijuana laced with things like pesticides or fentanyl to come into the hands of recreational users.

The bill makes it so that you cannot smoke indoors outside of your own home. DeWine cited the importance of passing the bill for people who are not interested in being around smoke when they are in public settings.

The governor said the bill isn't completely what he wanted but that compromises are part of the process.

"I would prefer no home grow but you don't always get what you want," DeWine said. "I think it's a good bill, part of this is a compromise. I didn't vote for this ballot initiative but the people voted for it."
