Bankrupt SmileDirectClub abruptly ends dental alignment service

A company that promised an alternative to visiting an orthodontist is shutting down after filing for bankruptcy.
The SmileDirectClub announced on its website an immediate winding down of operations worldwide.
The company’s dental alignment treatment is no longer available through its telehealth platform and care for its two million existing customers is no longer available.
All orders that have not yet shipped have been canceled and those customers will not receive aligners, according to the statement.
Anyone wishing to continue treatment outside of the SmileDirect platform is being advised to consult their local doctor or dentist with any questions around future aligner treatment.
The Lifetime Guarantee offered by the company is no longer in effect.
The company says it expects customers on the SmilePay Plan to continue to make all monthly payments until payment has been made.
For those seeking a refund, SmileDirect says there will be more information to come once the bankruptcy process determines next steps and additional measures customers can take.
