A dog at an animal shelter in Brookfield is still looking for his "forever home" after three years of being taken in.

Healthy Hearts and Paws President Jason Cooke says Charlie, a seven-year-old hound mix was taken into the shelter three years ago after another shelter in South Carolina had contacted him about Charlie.

Cooke tells 21 News that Charlie had tested positive for heartworm disease and that the shelter could not treat him, so they sent Charlie to Brookfield. He has since been treated and is now up for adoption.

Despite this, Cooke says he's still had a hard time finding a home outside the kennel.

Cooke tells us this could be due to a multitude of reasons including him not being recommended for homes with children due to the issue of food aggression, his previous condition of heartworm disease and the amount of competition there is when it comes to adopting dogs here in the Valley.

According to Cooke, Charlie is very friendly both with other dogs and other people. He loves food and will do anything for a treat. He also loves to go for walks and is very easily house trained.

Cooke tells 21 News Charlie earned himself the nickname "Milk Bone Charlie" because he's always stealing Milk Bones and other tasty treats from his friends at the shelter.

Anyone interested in giving Charlie a forever home should message the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project's Facebook page or call Cooke at 234-855-5647. Cooke says even if you don't think Charlie is right for you, he's got plenty of other dogs who just might be.
