GIRARD, Ohio -  Former employees from the Burger King in Girard claim they weren’t getting paid correctly for months.

“We had a girl have her vehicle repossessed in our parking lot because she had not received a paycheck for two weeks,” an anonymous former employee said.

Some said checks and direct deposits wouldn’t come at all on payday.

“Just last week I had something due and I couldn’t pay because I didn't get my pay on time,” a former employee said.

Other employees said they got checks every week but they weren't for the right amount. Abbie Mccale said she was promised a $4 raise for a promotion to a manager position. She took the position but said she never saw the increase on her checks.

“I would literally get sick to my stomach like I would feel like there's a knot that would be in me every single time going in, realizing I was not getting the pay that I deserved,” Mccale said.

Others said they wouldn’t get paid for all the hours they worked. At the start and end of every shift, Burger King employees enter their number and scan their finger print at a register to track hours. One former employee told us that she punched in and out on time but when it came time for payroll, they told her her hours were “lost.

All four former employees that we spoke to said the problems started when they got new owners. In April of 2023, Toms King Services filed for bankruptcy and the Karali Group bought their stores. They own the Girard store along with 26 other Burger Kings in the Youngstown, Dayton and Cleveland area.

“It was like, really bad for just everybody. People's mental health, people’s physical health,” an anonymous employee said about the condition of the workplace.

“Why even work at this point because it's not sustainable,” another former employee said.

All former employees that spoke to 21 news quit the job in the past few months because of the inconsistent pay and work conditions.

Burger King told 21 news in a statement “We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with the Franchisee of this location, who confirmed that this error was caused by a technical glitch.

The Franchisee took immediate action after being notified of the issue and confirmed that the two impacted Team Members have now been paid. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused to the valued Team Members.”

But the former employees said it was more than two workers and that things haven't been made right.

“Almost 100 dollars are still missing out of the paycheck,” one former employee said. ”We’re not saying destroy the company, destroy this destroy that, we just want what is owed to us.”

Meanwhile, Mccale is looking for back pay for the months she went without the manager's salary she was promised.
