YOUNGSTOWN - Changes are coming to Ohio in the new year. Several new laws and new policies will go into place in 2024 will have an impact statewide.

Some of them will hit your wallets. 

In January, Ohio’s minimum wage will increase. Non-tipped employees working at businesses that make more than $365,000 dollars a year will have their wage increased to $10.45 an hour. Tipped employees will make $5.25 an hour. That's .35 cents more an hour for non-tipped workers and .20 cents more per hour for tipped workers.  

But, on the turnpike things will get more expensive. Toll rates will increase in January from .061 to .065 per mile for those with an EZ Pass in the new year. For semi trucks the toll rate will increase to $0.204 per mile, up from $0.189 per mile for EZ Pass drivers. 

2024 will also have several laws come into effect - one will change what people can buy. 

Starting Jan 1, flavored tobacco will be banned in Columbus, Ohio. Any tobacco related to fruity or candy can not be sold in Columbus under the new law. This includes flavors like  fruit, chocolate, vanilla, honey, candy, cocoa, dessert, alcoholic beverage, menthol, mint, wintergreen, herb or spice (excluding flavored shisha tobacco) for any tobacco used in cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e cigarettes and rolling papers. 

Another law will change social media freedom for children.

The Parental Notification by Social Media Operators Act starts Jan. 15. Children under 16 will have to get parental consent before making any new social media accounts on sites like Facebook, X, Snapchat and gaming sites. Accounts made before Jan. 15 will not need parental consent authorization.
