POLAND, Ohio - A Poland Village neighborhood lost power and a highway was temporarily shut down after sparking wires fell on New Year’s Day.

It happened late Monday morning along Youngstown Pittsburgh Road, near the Western Reserve Fire District Station 92.

The wires burned the snow-covered grass and damaged the sidewalk below, burning into the ground.

No one was injured.  Fewer than five FirstEnergy customers lost electricity until repairs were made.

Fire investigators say the damage caused by the fallen wires should serve as a reminder to stay away from dangerous and sometimes deadly downed lines.

The incident was the Fire District’s first call of the new year.

Firefighters posted video on Facebook in which the crackling of the fire can be heard.
