A Youngstown man has been arrested after police say he allegedly threatened a man with a hatchet during a physical altercation.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to a Shell gas station on Market Street shortly before 4:00 a.m. Thursday in reference to a fight.

Upon arrival police observed two males on the ground with one pinning the other down. As officers approached, police say that one of the men yelled that the other man, identified as 56-year-old Richard Barksdale had threatened him with a hatchet.

Police say a witness was standing by at the scene holding a hatchet. Both Barksdale and the other man were handcuffed and placed in separate cruisers.

A witness told police that Barksdale arrived at the gas station and observed the other male's truck parked at a gas pump.

Police say Barksdale immediately got out of the vehicle, walked towards the truck with a hatchet and looked inside before putting the hatched back into his vehicle.

According to the report, the Barksdale, a woman with him and the driver of the truck engaged in a physical altercation. A witness told police she took the hatchet from Barksdale's vehicle, because she was unsure if he'd use it in the altercation.

Police spoke with Barksdale who told officers that he was approaching the other male to ask why he had threatened the woman he was with and his children that the two had in common.

Barksdale went on to tell police the other male "came at him" so he sprayed a can of WD-40 toward the other male.

Police say based on the information collected at the scene, Barksdale was determined to be the primary aggressor in the incident so he was placed under arrest and charged with Aggravated Menacing.
