A special election date has been set for the vacant seat that will be left behind by Bill Johnson and Ohio Sixth Congressional District.

According to Gov. Mike DeWine's office, the election schedule will include a partisan primary occurring on March 19th, 2024, and the special election on June 11th, 2024.

Rep. Bill Johnson formally communicated with the Governor his resignation effective January 21st, 2024 at the end of the day. The formal communication of the resignation allows the Governor to call the special election and issue a Writ of Election.

Johnson will begin his new job as YSU President beginning January 22.

According to a message sent out to YSU's community by Trustee Chairman Michael Peterson, Johnson has submitted his resignation from Congress on Tuesday and his term as Congressman will end January 21 with him taking his position as University President the following day.

This is earlier than his projected date of March 15.

Prior to his appointment as President, Johnson will continue visiting campus as often as possible visiting with students, faculty and staff.
