A Girard woman is facing murder charges after shooting a man at a home in the 200 block Dearborn Street in the city.

According to the police report, the man shot, Michael Cusick, 33, was transported to a hospital on January 4 and later died. Cusick was shot in the chest/stomach area. Police were made aware of the incident and went to the home where the shooting took place.

Police officers spoke with Kristen Schmidt, 30, who, according to the police report, told officers that she and her boyfriend, Cusick, had been arguing all night and shot Cusick after he allegedly tried to break into her house.

Police took Schmidt's 9mm handgun into evidence and took Schmidt to the police station to provide a statement.

Schmidt was initially charged with felonious assault on January 4, but the charges were modified to murder after Cusick died from his wounds on January 6.

Schmidt appeared in Judge Jeffrey D. Adler's Girard Municipal court Wednesday afternoon for her initial appearance on the charge.

She will be back in court on January 31 at 11 am for a preliminary hearing. Schmidt's bond is set at $200,000.
