Two suspects all the way from Brooklyn, New York have been indicted on multiple charges after allegedly using counterfeit $20 bills multiple stores in the Southern Park Mall.

According to a police report, the incident occurred back in October of 2023, but court records show the two suspects, 35-year-old Tanisha Bynoe and 31-year-old Travis Bayne were indicted on charges of Counterfeiting, Theft and Attempted Theft, as well as on Thursday, January 11.

Bynoe is also facing a charge of Obstructing Official Business.

The charges stem from an incident in October of 2023 when police were dispatched to the Southern Park Mall in reference to a suspect trying to use counterfeit currency and fleeing through Macy's.

Police arrived at Macy's and detained Bayne, but soon learned that Bynoe was also a suspect in the crime. Police say Bynoe tried to get away, but officers were soon able to detain her as well.

According to the police report, officers searched Bynoe's vehicle with her consent and found multiple credit and debit cards, as well as prepaid gift cards stored together in a plastic bag.

Police then spoke to a manager at one of the stores the two allegedly visited. The manager told police he was alerted by other stores in the Belden Village Mall in Canton and Summit Mall in Fairlawn of a suspect passing counterfeit bills matching Bayne's description.

Police say they contacted Jackson Township Police, who serve the area of Belden Village Mall and Fairlawn Police who serve Summit Mall and both departments confirmed similar cases with suspects matching Bynoe and Bayne's description happened there.

Another employee at that store told police that Bayne entered the store attempting to return items purchased at another location for cash. Police say when Bayne gave his email address, the employee told him there was a lock on his account and he'd need to get the manager.

Police say Bayne left the store and came back with Bynoe who attempted to buy four hats valued at roughly $45 each. Police say when cashing her out, the $20 bills appeared to be counterfeit.

After the employee positively identified Bynoe and Bayne as the suspects, the two were placed under arrest.

According to the report, police were approached by employees of other stores who told them they were defrauded by the two suspects as well with Bayne allegedly trying to return merchandise from another location and Bynoe trying to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise with fake currency.

About a week later, police conducted a search warrant of Bynoe's vehicle and found bags with receipts and merchandise from multiple stores including Hot Topic, Victoria's Secret, Zumiez and Foot Locker, as well as multiple counterfeit $20 bills in white envelopes, marijuana and $213 in U.S. currency.

Bynoe and Bayne have been indicted in Mahoning County for the alleged incidents on four counts of counterfeiting, one count of misdemeanor theft and one count of attempted misdemeanor theft. Bynoe also faces a count of obstructing official business.
