SHENANGO VALLEY - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding motorists to stay alert when driving in foggy conditions.

PennDOT says increasing fog on roadways creates dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians alike, so drivers should drive slower to allow for enough reaction time for obstacles like pedestrians or slower moving vehicles.

If fog becomes so dense that you can't see at all, it's best to pull over and turn on your hazard lights to make your vehicle more visible.

Pennsylvania law requires moving vehicles to have their headlights turned on when traveling in conditions such as fog and rain. Be sure to use low beam headlights, as high beams will create a glare and make it difficult to see the road ahead.

Additional tips from PennDOT to safety travel through fog include:

- Allow yourself additional time to get to your destination

- Make sure your headlights and taillights are working properly

- Use windshield wipers and defrosters to enhance visibility

- Use roadside reflectors or the right edge of the road as a guide

- Avoid passing other vehicles or changing lanes
