Tanker driver killed in fiery Summit County crash

MACEDONIA, Ohio - The Summit County Medical Examiner is working to positively identify the driver of a fuel truck that crashed and burst into flames on Saturday, shutting down a busy highway.
Authorities say the tanker fell and overturned off the I-271 northbound entrance ramp onto the northbound lanes of Route 8 at around 9:15 a.m. in Macedonia.
The Summit County Sheriff says the tanker went out of control and went over the bridge's side as the driver attempted to get onto I-271.
Summit County's hazmat team and the EPA were contacted due to the amount of black smoke and fire present.
Fuel from the tanker was getting into Brandywine Creek and moving downstream. Absorbent dikes were placed in several places to stop the flow of fuel.
It was estimated that the truck was carrying approximately 7,500 gallons of petroleum.
Route 8 South at Highland Road and the northbound and southbound ramps to I-271 at Route 8 were closed until the Ohio Department of Transportation determined they could be safely reopened.
