SALEM, Ohio - Earlier in the month, 21 News reported that the BMV office in Salem would be closing in June, much to the surprise of locals in the area. Now, a state Senator has penned a letter to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine hoping to stop that from happening.

In his letter to Governor DeWine, Ohio Senator Michael Rulli notes that Salem is the largest city in Columbiana County with a population of over 20,000 if you include contiguous townships and questions the proposal to redirect customers to Lisbon, a community of under 3,000.

"The proposal to just shut this office don and move everything to Lisbon, a community of under 3,000 and make that one office the only BMV office for the entire county of over 100,000 would not be beneficial to my constituents," Rulli said.

Rulli goes on to state that he's heard from Salem Mayor, Cindi Dickey, members of Salem City Council and leaders in the city's service clubs and Chamber of Commerce. Rulli says all of them urged that something should be done to keep the Salem office open.

"I urge you to take immediate action to reverse the closure of the Salem office. If you have any questions, I am available at any time of the day or night to speak with you about this very important public safety office," Rulli said.
