PARIS TWP., Portage Co., Ohio - Residents escaped from their burning Portage County home early Tuesday thanks to working smoke alarms.

The alarms awakened residents of the home on the 8800 block of Newton Falls Road in Paris Township shortly after 5 a.m.

The alarm was first called in as a chimney fire.  However, fire and smoke spread to the rest of the house after the occupants escaped unharmed.

Paris Township firefighters called for help from other fire departments, including Newton Falls.

Although the cause of the fire is still being investigated, fire officials suspect a wood burner.
