Steward Health is in hot water on Capitol Hill as its financial issues could cause closures of its hospitals across the country.

Steward Health operates medical centers across the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys.

The system fell into financial woes, owing about 50 million dollars in unpaid rent and being accused of not paying for work done at Trumbull Regional Medical Center.

Congresswoman Lori Trahan of Massachusetts took to the stand, saying this is all part of a dangerous private equity playbook.

"Families who receive care at Holy Family Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center - both owned by Steward - were recently notified that their care is now in jeopardy because of the corporation's gross financial negligence that's seeing the company try to shutter four of the nine hospitals they own in Massachusetts," Trahan said.

Steward Health says its debt stems from inflation and a decline in patients since the pandemic.
