Youngstown Area Jewish Federation awards grants to help combat antisemitism and discrimination

The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation recently awarded $1,000 grants to two local organizations in the valley.
The money is going toward the Akiva Academy and the Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past.
The academy received a grant for a school trip to Washington D.C. to visit the National Holocaust Museum. Learning about the Holocaust is mandatory at the academy, the visit to the museum will help put the tragedy into perspective, according to the news release.
In addition to the museum, students on the trip will visit the African American History Museum, Arlington National Cemetery and several memorials like the World War Two Memorial.
Mahoning Sojourn into the Past will use their money to screen the movie "Till," about the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till. A discussion with co-writer of the film, Keith Beauchamp, will follow the screening to highlight systemic racism in the United States that existed in the past and still does, according to a news release from the Jewish Federation.
The money was given to these organizations through the Tikkun Olam Community Impact Grant, which was created to fund local, non-profit organizations engaged in initiatives designed to combat antisemitism and other forms of discrimination.
