SLIDESHOW: Warren woman sentenced to 42 months in prison for OVI crash that paralyzed driver
Jamie Lee Franks of Warren was in court Wednesday afternoon for re-sentencing after a judge mistakenly sentenced her to less time than what the law required.
Thirty-four-year-old Franks was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison on charges of aggravated vehicular assault and OVI.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred on Route 5 on Jan. 3, 2023 that left 21-year-old JiJuan Darrington paralyzed from the chest down.
According to police reports, the crash resulted in Darrington's car being sandwiched between Franks's vehicle and another car.
Originally, Franks was going to be sentenced to 40 months in prison, however that sentencing was found to be unlawful.
Members of the victim's family did not attend the resentencing hearing.
On the night of the accident, Franks slammed her Chevy Malibu into a Honda Civic, causing Darrington to crash into a white Ford Focus.
When police arrived to the scene, they say Darrington was thrown into the back seat, and he appeared to be in a frantic state saying "Everything's on fire, I can't feel my legs."
When police checked on Franks, they say she had glossy eyes, heavily slurred speech and reeked of alcohol.
In addition to spending 42 months in prison, Franks will be required to pay heavy fines.
This offense will follow her for the rest of her life. She will be without a license for seven years and required to drive with specialized OVI license plates after those seven years are up.
