Decision 2024: Springfield Local Schools operating costs relying on March levy renewal

Springfield Local School District has a levy renewal on the ballot in March 2024. The levy is a renewal and income tax of 1 per cent of individuals and estates for current expenses for 5 years, according to the Mahoning County Board of Elections.
"Nothing is different in this levy. There is no increase on tax payers," says Superintendent Rachael Smith when asked about any difference between previous renewals of this levy.
Additionally, Smith says "the 1% [tax of individuals and estates] funds daily operations. It pays for everything a school needs to function on a daily basis." For Springfield, this includes academic programs, electric bills, salaries/benefits, and more.
If the renewal fails, Smith says the schools would not have the operating budget to maintain current programs.
