WARREN, Ohio - Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith has proposed a remediation project for a historic bridge in Warren.

According to a press release, Smith has identified the "desperate condition" of many bridges throughout Trumbull County and is looking to provide the resources to address these problems.

That's why Smith is soliciting public comments about a proposed project to rehabilitate the historic West Market Street Bridge, which spans the Mahoning River and is located just west of Mahoning Avenue in Downtown Warren.

The bridge was built back in 1930 and is now considered structurally deficient based on recent inspection.

Rehabilitation work would include the removal and replacement of the existing asphalt pavement, patching of the deteriorated concrete, removal and replacement of the existing concrete sidewalks, resetting the original granite curb, repairing the cracked stone facia and deteriorated joints, cleaning of the stone surfaces and replacement of the bridge lighting.

The project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026 and be completed by the fall of 2026. The project is expected to cost about $5,161,756.

During the construction period, West Market Street will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the bridge site fir about 180 days. The detour route will utilize South Street and Mahoning Avenue.

While the project is not expected to result in any substantial impacts to environmental resources, Smith is currently seeking comments from the public on this proposed project.

These comments should be directed to Gary Shaffer by March 22 at 650 North River Road NW, Warren or 330-675-2640.
