Vance calls for takeover of higher education to combat 'left-wing domination'
Ohio-based U.S. Senator JD Vance has called for a takeover of universities across the country in an effort to control what is taught in university classrooms.
According to an interview published in The European Conservative, Vance called for the U.S. to emulate Hungarian strongman Viktor Orban's approach, which controls Hungarian universities through public foundations made up of Orban's loyalists.
Vance is quoted as saying this is "the closest that conservatives have ever gotten to successfully dealing with left-wing domination of universities."
However, another publication, Inside Higher Education fired back with editor and co-founder Doug Lederman telling 21 News that discussing all ideas is the key to teaching students critical thinking.
"Part of higher education is to challenge people's points of view," Lederman said.
Lederman went on to say this is also important to get students to think and speak for themselves and grow intellectually.
"We do see evidence that conservative students particularly are more worried to say what they think because they fear their fellow students are going to give them grief about it," Lederman said.
21 News has reached out to Senator Vance for comment, but we have not heard back.
