Police stress gun safety at Youngstown Schools' Empowered Parents Summit

Gun safety was one of the main topics at the Empowered Parents Summit for Youngstown City School District families.
Members of the police department spoke about the importance of teaching parents to keep their guns locked up and away from their kids.
Police say one out of 20 children in the United States killed last year were in Mahoning County.
"That's why we're starting here with our parent organizations so that they can be the champions of this message about keeping your firearms secure and safe from children who may inadvertently get ahold of them and have accidents," Youngstown Police Department Captain Jason Simon said.
Police also handed out gun locks and plan to talk with other city schools on this issue in the hopes of getting the word out.
The event was held at the Jewish Community Center on Gypsy Lane and also touched on parent-school engagement planning, team building and other workshops.
