GIRARD, Ohio - A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit between the City of Girard and a company looking to put up a billboard in the city.

According to court records, the party had reached a "mutual resolution" and the case was settled and dismissed without prejudice on Friday. Girard Mayor Mark Zuppo tells 21 News the plaintiffs will receive $13,000 as a result of this settlement.

The lawsuit stemmed from Huntington Outdoor LLC and Summit Locations LLC, who sued the city's administration for not allowing them to put up a billboard in the city's downtown area.

Former Girard Mayor Jim Melfi previously told 21 News that the city passed an ordinance years ago that bans billboards being erected in certain parts of the city. The companies claimed this ordinance is a violation of free speech.

Zuppo says the company is still not able to have the billboard erected in downtown like they wanted, but it will instead be erected on the city's south side.
