YSU: Penguins open spring practice

The Youngstown State football team opened spring football practice Friday morning with more than 100 players participating.
They'll have 13 more practices before the Red/White game, Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 am.
More than a dozen transfers went through their first workout along with three new defensive assistant coaches.
"Its always a competition," said fifth year head coach Doug Phillips who's coming off a playoff season (8-5) and is 19-22 overall.
"We're all replaceable, even myself and coming into spring ball every position, we evaluate and you either practice like a national champion or your average and you can't be average in this league," lamented Phillips.
Tight end Brendan Serrano is in his fifth season and final spring practice.
"It's truly amazing and I'm blessed to have the opportunity to be out here with my guys and piece it all together to get ready for the season."
