Editor's note: A previous version of this story indicated only some of the defendants; however, all were dismissed.

The plaintiffs in a civil lawsuit filed by a former Poland High School student who claims she was victimized by former school resource officer Steve Kent was dismissed Thursday.

The plaintiffs withdrew their complaint, and each party involved in the suit will be responsible for covering their own attorney's fees and costs.

The civil suit was first filed in U.S. District Court in 2022, accusing Kent of being a sexual predator, alleging that Poland School Board and Township Trustees knew of what the suit claims was Kent's propensity towards female students and alleged inappropriate relationships with female students.

At the request of attorneys for the former student and trustees, Judge Benita Pearson approved a request to dismiss all claims against all parties involved.

The teen, who was 16 and 17 years old at the time of the alleged incidents, says Kent was supposed to make the school environment safe, but instead accused him of being a sexual predator who groomed, manipulated, and coerced her to engage in various sexual acts with him.

Kent has been convicted of tampering with evidence for performing a factory reset on his cell phone to erase evidence of communication with the student. However, the same jury that convicted Kent found him “not guilty” on three charges, including sexual battery.

Kent was sentenced to a year in prison but remains free on bond as he pursues an appeal.

The civil suit was asking for more than $25,000 in damages plus legal costs.
