Egg prices remain high ahead of Easter Sunday
If you've noticed some grocery store prices still feeling exceptionally high... you're not wrong.
The average price for eggs right now is about $3 for a dozen.
While today's price is significantly less than the record-high of $4.82 per dozen in January of 2023, it's still higher than the average cost before the pandemic.
Ohio State Extension ANR Educator Haley Shoemaker says this sticker shock is a typical occurrence this time of year because of heightened demand for eggs. The higher prices are also partially due to lingering effects of an avian flu outbreak in 2023, which took a measurable toll on the poultry industry. Shoemaker notes, it will likely take a few years for farmers to safely increase the size of their flocks.
"To date in this outbreak we've seen over 82 million birds affected. Now, that includes backyard flocks, some wild birds, and, of course, our commercial flocks," she says.
Shoemaker recommends visiting local farms to purchase fresh eggs, since those farmers are more likely to offer a high quality product at a less expensive price-point compared to a grocery store's offerings.
