The men and women entrusted with protecting our freedoms recently partnered with Youngstown State University to prepare for something they hope never happens.

Reserve Airmen from the 910th Operations Group at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station gathered at YSU’s pool to take part in water survival training.

The training includes becoming familiar with aircrew flight equipment aboard a C-130H Hercules aircraft if the plane is forced down over water.

In addition to having swimming skills, crews need to know immediately how to inflate and get into a 20-person and one-person life raft.

Training also covers the challenges of staying safe when parachuting into water.

Water survival training is mandatory for Air Force aircrew members every three years
