If you smell a rotten egg smell coming from natural gas in your home, it may not be from a leak, but rather an overabundance of the chemical added to the gas in some portions of Ohio.

Residents in Columbiana County like those in Salem were alerted, as some have noted smelling mercaptan, the additive to natural gas that causes the rotten egg smell. Since natural gas is both colorless and odorless, the chemical is added so people can detect the presence of gas.

Officials say a gas supplier added too much of the additive, and the smell is not harmful, according tot he Columbiana County EMA.

Officials say the additive must work its way through the system. However, anyone who is concerned by the strong odor is asked to contact the Salem Fire Department or your local fire department to verify that there is not an issue.
