Local environmentalists hope to bring attention to what they call, a "small but mighty" mistake the Ohio EPA made in the permitting process of a Columbiana County landfill.

The Ohio EPA is now extending public comment for the West Point Renewables landfill in Madison township after learning the agency had provided an incorrect email address to the public.

Jamie Nentwick of River Valley Organizing said she wants to see the Ohio EPA take more accountability after her group attempted to send public comments on the proposed landfill, but then found the comments didn't go through.

Residents have voiced environmental concerns about the landfill in recent months, and the Ohio EPA informed the public back in February that the agency was accepting comments concerning the landfill through April 11th, and directed people to send comments to this email address:  [email protected].COM, but this address has a typo.

The email address should be:  [email protected].GOV

The Ohio EPA said the agency was made aware of the typo on April 11th, and because of the error, the public comment period is being extended until April 19th.

Nentwick said she doesn't believe that's enough time.

"Giving one-week extension doesn't really do the commenting period justice compared to how long the incorrect email was out there," Nentwick said, "We'd like to see the EPA do is properly announce the mistake, and give ample time for people who could possibly be out of state, out of country, who knows their situation, time to resend their comments. Announcing it within four days of the new deadline, I feel, is quite irresponsible."

21 News brought the concerns to the Ohio EPA and asked if the agency would consider a further extension.

The Ohio EPA said the extension will not go past April 19th.
