The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has announced a new slate of projects coming to Ohio this year - including one in Mahoning County.

Specifically, extensive work is set to begin this year at the Eastgate Toll Plaza, which include bridge replacement work, mainline resurfacing and completion of pavement work. The work is expected to include construction of open road tolling lanes for westbound traffic.

This work is expected to be complete sometime this year.

Additionally, a bridge replacement will be done for the overhead bridge at Boardman-Canfield Road (U.S. R 224). This will happen in multiple phases and is expected to go into 2025.

During the replacement of the overhead bridge, traffic is expected to be maintained, according to the commission.

"To limit delays for travelers on the Ohio Turnpike, we strive to maintain two lanes of traffic in all three lane sections of the turnpike during peak travel times," said Chris Matta, chief engineer and deputy executive director for the turnpike commission. "Some single lane work zones will be necessary but will occur mostly during off-peak travel times or at night."

This year, the commission has a budget of about $254 million for capital improvement projects across the 241-mile toll road. This includes neraly $238 million for projects beginning in 2024 and completing projects that began in 2023.

Overall, more than $162 million in the 2024 capital plan is going to roadway and bridge projects. About 92 miles of pavement will be resurfaced, the pavement at aa toll plaza interchange will be reconstructed and 26 bridges total will be worked on, according to the commission.
