Jailed Cortland pro wrestler seeks pause in $250K suit against promoters WWE, AEW

A Cortland man who wrestles professionally under several names has asked a federal judge to pause his legal action against two professional wrestling promoters while he sits in jail for throwing urine on a corrections officer at the Trumbull County Jail.
Anthony Duane Wilson, 37, filed a motion asking U.S. District Court Judge Benita Pearson to suspend proceedings in his lawsuit alleging that World Wrestling Entertainment and All Elite Wrestling.
Wilson’s complaint, a fill-in-the-blanks template completed in handwritten text, seeks $250,000 in damages claiming that the promotion companies violated copyright laws by allegedly using his creative gimmicks, names, slogans, and likeness without his permission.
The complaint alleges the promoters stole ideas he planned to use in starting his own company, costing him fans and income.
A motion filed by Wilson last week asks the court to pause the proceedings because he is currently in the Trumbull County Jail and can't conduct legal action since he is acting as his attorney.
Wilson has been in jail since late last month when Trumbull County Judge Sean O’Brien found him guilty of harassment by an inmate.
According to the county prosecutor’s office, the case involved an incident on Jan. 29, 2023, where a Trumbull County Jail correction officer was splashed with urine that Wilson had thrown from a milk carton through an opening in the discipline pod of the jail.
During the trial, testimony came from two correction officers and the jail administrator. No defense witnesses were called.
According to court documents, Wilson planned to plead “not guilty by reason of insanity”. However, Judge O’Brien found him competent to stand trial.
Judge O’Brien immediately revoked Wilson’s bond and has yet to schedule a sentencing hearing.
The WWE and AEW have both filed responses to the federal civil lawsuit denying the claims. The WWE filed a motion to dismiss Wilson’s complaint claiming he failed to spell out damages he has allegedly suffered.
