Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz has filed a protection order against a former mayoral candidate after alleged menacing incidents.

According to court records, Mayor Mientkiewicz filed a civil stalking protection order against former mayoral candidate George "Geo" Kuriatnyk alleging multiple incidents involving him at City Council meetings.

According to the order filed in the Trumbull County Court on April 2, Kuriatnyk had been involved in two separate menacing incidents against Mientkiewicz within the past 18 months.

Court documents allege in both of of these incidents, Kuriatnyk got into a "menacing stance" against Mientkiewicz trying to provoke a physical altercation.

The document further alleges that within the past few weeks, Kuriatnyk had sent threatening text messages to a Council member, which included physical threats including that he was going to "take people out" and "eat the last bullet."

Furthermore, the document alleges at a City Council meeting held on March 20, Kuriatnyk made direct threats to Mientkiewicz telling him there would be consequences for his actions, that he would die defending his family and take people with him and that police would not stop him.

The document alleges another text message to a council member stating that the member has known Kuriatnyk for 40 years and knows what he would do.

Niles court records show Kuriatnyk is currently charged with aggravated menacing and intimidation. His case is currently under consideration by a grand jury.
