YSU reiterates commitment to easy transition for Eastern Gateway students

After an Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) board meeting revealed that the college plans to dissolve on October 31, Youngstown State University is reiterating its commitment to giving EGCC students a path forward to continue their education.
According to the release, YSU is committed to collaborating with EGCC and local authorities, including Jefferson County Commissioners, to explore opportunities to establish a YSU presence in the Steubenville area.
"As we continue to engage in constructive dialogue with EGCC and local stakeholders, our commitment to providing accessible and high-quality educational opportunities remains steadfast," YSU President Bill Johnson said. "Today's EGCC board meeting further emphasizes the importance of our collaborative efforts in supporting students' educational journeys."
The university has conducted several assessments for educational needs in the area leading to the addition of more than 50 associate degrees and certificates.
"We are dedicated to removing barriers and streamlining the transition process for EGCC students," Interim Provost Jennifer Pintar said. "Our recent policy adjustments, and the hard work and dedication of our faculty, academic leadership and the leadership of the Academic Senate, underscore our commitment to ensuring these students achieve their education goals at YSU."
The YSU Academic Senate has also made adjustments to remove barriers for EGCC students, including eliminating the residency requirement and adjusting GPA admissions requirements.
The university says it received more than 1,200 applications from Eastern Gateway students. More than 600 of those students have been admitted and more than 100 are registered for the summer and fall semesters.
