1999: The 60-inch hot strip mill is back in operation at Duferco Farrell Corp., which bought the mill from Caparo Steel Corp. in January.

Columbiana's three bike-patrol policemen, Sgt. Jim Ewing and Patrolmen Chris Dailey and Wade Boley have completed a grueling police-biking course at Cuyahoga Community College.

George Foster, 33, of Warren is arrested in the murder of Bridget Wetzl, the 10-year-old Weathersfield girl whose body was found in a wooded area of McDonald a day after she disappeared.

1984: Ohio Senate President Harry Meshel, D-Youngstown, predicts smooth sailing for two capital improvement funding bills, including $43.7 million earmarked for Youngstown State University.

The Ohio Department of Insurance approves about half of the rate increase sought by Blue Cross for supplemental Medicare plans. Blue Cross had sought a $3.83 per-month premium hike.

The Youngstown Planning Commission recommends that the federal government build its proposed courthouse and office building atop the municipal parking garage, which was designed to support additional stories. 

1974: Dr. Saul Friedman, a Youngstown State University professor, is the speaker at a memorial service by combined religious schools of the Youngstown Jewish community for 30 people killed in Maalot, Israel.

A Campbell man sentenced to three concurrent terms in Mansfield Reformatory on drug and weapons charges becomes the first Mahoning County inmate released under "shock parole." He had served three months of a two-year sentence. 

1949: Rising building costs may mean the Youngstown school building program may have to be shelved, says Board President Warren P. Williamson Jr. 

Charles M. White, president of Republic Steel Corp, says the long-term outlook for the steel industry is healthy, although the volume of orders has fallen off. 

Lauritz Melchior, one of the greatest Wagnerian tenors of modern times and an opera star who doesn't hesitate to clown occasionally, appears at Stambaugh Auditorium.
