YOUNGSTOWN - Sunday looks like a perfect day for a bike ride, and if you're traveling along Belmont Avenue you'll likely notice quite a few of them.

The Build a Better Belmont Coalition's Second Annual Bike Belmont happens Sunday, May 19th. Organizers expect to see as many as 150 riders, doubling last year's participants. The registration deadline has passed.

The effort to improve and revitalize Youngstown and the surrounding area is a constant one, and the Belmont Avenue Corridor is an important part of that work. Bike Belmont highlights the improvements already made and the changes that are still to come.

Riders will meet at the B&O Station in Downtown Youngstown to kick off their journey down Belmont Avenue. They'll choose between two routes, depending on skill level. The first is a 10-mile round-trip ride to the Giant Eagle in Liberty Township and back, keeping a comfortable 9 to 11 MPH pace. More experienced riders can go for the second option: a 22-mile ride down Belmont, through Liberty and into Vienna Township. It will turn around at the Youngstown Regional Airport, with bikers keeping a more moderate pace of 12 to 15 MPH. Both routes lead back to the B&O Station.

During their journey, riders will stop at a few businesses to learn about the services they provide to the community. That's what Bike Belmont is centered around: recognizing the importance of the Belmont Avenue Corridor, and promoting the local businesses along it that help make the Mahoning Valley great. Above all, Bike Belmont brings people together, allowing them to connect with neighbors and consider the untapped potential in our communities.

Following their rides, participants will be treated to a free lunch at the B&O, provided by Daddy D's BBQ. Over lunch, they'll have the opportunity to share about their experience and things they noticed along the way. Organizers will share ways to get involved, ensuring that community members have a voice when it comes to reimagining Belmont Avenue.

21 WFMJ-TV is media sponsor for the event, alongside many other community sponsors that came together to make this possible. Jimmy's Italian Specialties is the presenting sponsor, as it celebrates 50 years on Belmont Avenue. Members of CycWard and OutSpokin-Wheelmen Bike Clubs will help lead the rides. Electric bikes were also made available for rental, courtesy of YoGo Bikeshare and Cruise the Creek.
