A Boardman man is charged after police say he led them on a chase exceeding 100 miles per hour early Sunday morning.

According to a police report, Boardman Police were assisting Springfield Township on a traffic stop on Western Reserve Road shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday when they saw a motorcycle traveling southbound on I-680 at an "extremely high" speed.

Police say the motorcycle then traveled northbound on the South Avenue extension, stopped at the stop sign and then accelerated "rapidly" onto I-680 northbound.

Officers then began to chase the vehicle at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour according to the report. During the chase, the motorcyclist exited onto Route 224 running a red light and continued heading east towards Struthers Road.

Eventually, officers lost sight of the motorcycle, but another officer soon found it crashed into a ditch on Struthers Road with the motorcyclist, identified as 57-year-old Richard Shutrump still there.

Police say Shutrump suffered minor injuries from the crash.

Police say Shutrump admitted to drinking earlier in the night and appeared to be intoxicated. He was transported to the hospital where he refused to submit to a chemical test according to police.

Shutrump was charged with OVI and was also cited for running the red light. Due to his injuries and being admitted into the hospital, police were not able to arrest him on a failure to comply charge saying a warrant for this charge will need to be prepared.

In the meantime, Shutrump is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Thursday.
