South Range student killed in rollover crash on Ohio Turnpike in Springfield Township
A student from the South Range Local School District has died in a rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Springfield Township on Wednesday evening.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has confirmed with 21 News that 16-year-old South Range Student Dominic Tomaino was killed in the deadly crash Wednesday evening.
First Responders were dispatched shortly before 8:30 p.m. to the Springfield Road bridge along the westbound lanes, just west of the Mahoning Valley Service Plaza. Troopers say the crash involved one vehicle that had struck a guardrail.
Troopers say a silver 2009 Volvo S60 was traveling eastbound when it went off the side of the roadway, struck the guardrail and went back across the lanes across the median grass ejecting Tomaino through the sunroof.
The vehicle then went across the westbound lanes before coming to rest in the westbound shoulder of the road.
Troopers say Tomaino was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
"During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with those who love and know [Tomaino]. Navigating such a heartbreaking loss is never easy, and we hope we never have to face this type of situation again," said South Range Superintendent Jarred Zapolnik.
In a message to families in the district, Zapolnik says an intervention team is providing counseling and resources for grieving students.
Traffic in the westbound lanes was backed up for miles, with only one lane open near the crash site. The road has since reopened.
