OVI Task Force announces Friday night sobriety checkpoint on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown
The Mahoning OVI Task Force, in conjunction with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, announced that it will conduct an OVI sobriety checkpoint in the area of 4477 Mahoning Avenue in Austintown from 10 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday.
Area law enforcement agencies are also taking part in expanded road patrols this weekend.
In 1990 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that holding sobriety checkpoints without first notifying drivers would violate the Constitution's provision barring illegal search and seizure.
However, in their ruling, the justices did not spell out what they considered to be adequate notification.
That same year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published recommended procedures for OVI checkpoints, including notifying the media of the planned roadblocks.
