A five hour long standoff in a usually quiet Boardman neighborhood was the result of a woman undergoing a mental health crisis, according to township police.

Neighbors living along the 3900 block of Arden Boulevard called officers three separate times beginning Sunday afternoon, reporting that a woman was yelling at neighbors and hurling racial slurs at a young boy.

Police say the woman could be seen wearing a machete strapped to her waist, a knife in her pants, and a pocketknife stashed in her bra.

The first two times, police say the woman shouted racial slurs at them and slammed the door of her home in their face.

Just after 6 p.m., when officers came to the home a third time, a neighbor showed them a video of the woman "with hedge clippers, swinging them wildly at the bushes and yelling for the neighbors to come over.”

Neighbors said they were worried about their children and police also said they were concerned about the safety of the woman’s six-year-old child.

Police and a SWAT team surrounded the home.

Around 10:30 p.m., an officer used a megaphone to call out to the woman inside the house.

Just before 11 p.m., the woman was led out of the house and hospitalized for evaluation.

Police say they’ll files charges of inducing panic and obstructing official business.
