YOUNGSTOWN - For 52 years the ACLD School and Learning Center in Youngstown has been a beacon of hope for children with learning disabilities.

After servicing families for more than five decades school leaders want to expand the facility.

The school's executive director, Erica Brown Fire said a 4500 square foot expansion is well overdue.

"This [expansion] will provide additional classrooms, office space for staff members who are currently working in remolded classrooms, a large meeting/ community room, and increased space for activity programs that target enhancement of cognitive and perceptual motor skills." Brown Fire said.

The school purchased the lot next to the facility last year during phase one of the project. Phase two includes an attached building with two levels and a lunch room.

The project costs $1.5 million, so far the school has raised over a million dollars, all from donors.

School leaders are hoping to have construction underway later this year.

"Once the needed funds become available, the construction will begin. As of today $435,588.40 is still needed to cover all costs. Brown Fire said.
