WASHINGTON - Contamination concerns have prompted an Ohio company to recall sandwiches sold in Ohio, Pennsylvania and five other states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Classic Delight LLC, of St. Mary’s, Ohio is recalling a limited number of individually wrapped sandwiches due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes, is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Products subject to the recall were shipped to distributors located in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Products may end up in food service distribution, convenience stores, and vending. Items were produced between May 11, 2023, and June 6, 2024.

The recall was issued after samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The production of the sandwiches has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

So far, the FDA says there have been no reports of illness or adverse reactions from people who ate the sandwiches.

Anyone who purchased the recalled products should throw them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
