Ohio - The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 112, or the Ohio Childhood Safety Act, which will require annual inspections of school doors.

The goal is to make sure they're working properly and are code compliant to ensure security of students and staff, according to a news release from former Ohio Senator Michael Rulli, who sponsored the bill before filling a vacant congressional seat left by Bill Johnson.

"As a former school board president, I want parents across the state to know we are working in Columbus for the next generation," Rulli said. "Our kids deserve to learn in a safe and secure environment."

The legislation holds schools to the same requirements as facilities deemed "secure." This means that understate law, schools will now be classified like hospitals, airports and courtrooms.

Senate Bill 112 now heads to the Ohio House for consideration.
